The golden jubilee of Manulele Tausala Elementary school was celebrated in style today at the school campus in Nu’uuli,
Students, teachers, parents and graduates of the school all joined in the celebration which was attended by Governor Lolo
Moliga, representatives and senators of Ituau and Tuala-uta and church ministers.
Chiefs and orators of Ituau and nearby villages which send their children to Manulele as well as representatives of the Lagafuaina family which own the land on which the school is built were also present.
The school opened as a consolidated school in 1966.
The keynote speaker was 87 year old Nanatiifaleteleotamalii Savusa, who once taught at the school.
She said when the school first opened, it was known as Nuuuli Village School.
But the name of the school was changed to Manulele Tausala Elementary in honor of Lady Bird Johnson, wife of Lyndon B. Johnson, the only US president ever to visit American Samoa.
The school enrollment is 1092 with over 80 staff members. 19 graduates of the school returned to teach at Manulele Tausala.
The 6-acre property that the school is built on was a gift from the Lagafuaina family during the time of High Chief Lagafuina Laisene who was also a senator for Ituau.
In his address at the jubilee celebration, Governor Lolo said the government will be forever thankful for the generous gift from the Lagafuaina family which has benefited children in the past, present and the future.
Mrs. Sola Lagafuaina Solaita spoke on behalf of the Lagafuaina family to congratulate the school.
She told the students about how her grandfather donated the land for their school and said maybe in the future the government would decide to rename the school after her grandfather.
