Pediatric Eye Care Screenings Begin

HSU Pediatric Eye Care Team Hosts School Screenings Across American Samoa

Pago Pago, AS — Dr. Allison Bradee, a pediatric ophthalmologist, and Hilary Walsh, an orthoptist from Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), are leading a pediatric eye care initiative in American Samoa. The team is conducting screenings and assessments to help promote early eye care awareness and intervention for children.

The screenings have already begun, with visits to Pago Elementary on October 16, and continuing today, October 17, at Manulele Elementary. These efforts aim to ensure that children receive the eye care they need to support their vision development and academic success.

Why Eye Care Matters:

"Eye care is essential for children’s development," says Dr. Bradee. "Healthy vision plays a key role in learning and growth, and early detection can help prevent long-term issues."

The specialists also emphasized the importance of parents staying informed about their children's vision needs. "Simple steps, like regular eye exams, can make a significant difference," adds Walsh.
